Cada a\u00f1o, al llegar la primavera, los estudiantes de \u00faltimo a\u00f1o de secundaria en Estados Unidos se enfrentan al reto de elegir a qu\u00e9 universidad asistir\u00e1n. Daniela Torres, estudiante de \u00faltimo a\u00f1o en la escuela secundaria DREAM Charter, no es la excepci\u00f3n: est\u00e1 debatiendo entre quedarse en la ciudad de Nueva York para asistir a Barnard o viajar a la costa oeste para intentar ingresar a Stanford. Pero hace tan solo cuatro a\u00f1os, cuando Daniela se enfrent\u00f3 a una decisi\u00f3n similar sobre a qu\u00e9 escuela secundaria de la ciudad de Nueva York asistir\u00eda, la respuesta fue mucho m\u00e1s sencilla. \u201cEstaba completamente perdida en el proceso\u201d, dijo. \u201cPuse todo mi empe\u00f1o en esas solicitudes y no me admitieron en ninguna de las escuelas\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n
Aunque ahora parezca incre\u00edble dada la calidad de las universidades a las que Daniela ha sido aceptada, un repaso a su trayectoria revela los obst\u00e1culos que ha superado, como emigrar sola a Nueva York desde Veracruz, M\u00e9xico, cuando cursaba s\u00e9ptimo grado. Con apenas un conocimiento b\u00e1sico de ingl\u00e9s, a Daniela le resultaba dif\u00edcil comunicarse y hacerse o\u00edr. Le costaba hacer amigos.<\/p>\n

Daniela Torres '21<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Tras varios meses en Estados Unidos, Daniela conoci\u00f3 a Jared Francis, director fundador de DCHS, en una feria escolar. \u00c9l ya conoc\u00eda su historia y sab\u00eda que DREAM podr\u00eda brindarle el apoyo espec\u00edfico que necesitaba para brillar. Daniela se uni\u00f3 a la familia DREAM en octavo grado, pero a\u00fan le tom\u00f3 varios meses superar su timidez al hablar en p\u00fablico. Cuando finalmente lo logr\u00f3, fue un d\u00eda inolvidable.<\/p>\n
\u201cLa primera vez que habl\u00f3 en clase, de hecho, lo tenemos documentado en un correo electr\u00f3nico\u201d, dijo Alison Browne, la profesora de estudios sociales de octavo grado de Daniela. \u201cLos estudiantes estaban debatiendo un tema, y de repente ella intervino y comparti\u00f3 con pasi\u00f3n su opini\u00f3n. Todos se detuvieron a escuchar. Desde ese momento, Daniela se gan\u00f3 la reputaci\u00f3n de ser una l\u00edder discreta pero perspicaz entre sus compa\u00f1eros y los profesores y administradores de DREAM. Si bien su naturaleza es escuchar primero, no teme expresar su opini\u00f3n cuando es importante y necesario. Como explica Browne, posee un \u201cimpresionante equilibrio entre humildad y determinaci\u00f3n\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDaniela no se considera directa, pero si le pides su opini\u00f3n, es clara y honesta\u201d, dijo Brandon Taylor, director de curr\u00edculo e instrucci\u00f3n de DCHS. \u2019Es la estudiante a la que acudo en busca de opini\u00f3n, y esa es una caracter\u00edstica importante\u201c.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ahora, a punto de graduarse de la preparatoria, Daniela se enfrenta a una decisi\u00f3n universitaria con dos opciones que podr\u00edan cambiarle la vida. Su objetivo final es encontrar el mejor programa pre-m\u00e9dico que le permita estudiar la relaci\u00f3n entre la gen\u00e9tica y la neurociencia, un tema que la ha interesado desde que a su abuela le diagnosticaron Parkinson y Alzheimer. Y aunque su primera opci\u00f3n fue quedarse en la ciudad de Nueva York \u2014y cerca de las redes de apoyo que ha construido desde que lleg\u00f3 aqu\u00ed en s\u00e9ptimo grado\u2014, Daniela sabe que es capaz de emprender su propio camino si considera que es el adecuado.<\/p>\n
