Hace treinta a\u00f1os, Jasmine Colon fue una de las primeras ni\u00f1as en jugar en el Campo de los Sue\u00f1os. Ahora, su hijo es alumno de la escuela DREAM Charter School.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Jasmine creci\u00f3 en la calle East 100. Justo enfrente de un solar vac\u00edo. Ese solar ya estaba vac\u00edo incluso antes de que ella naciera. Era un lugar sin vida, un sitio donde la gente tiraba las cosas que ya no quer\u00eda. Y con raz\u00f3n, estaba prohibido que los ni\u00f1os jugaran all\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Pero el d\u00eda que DREAM \u2014entonces Harlem RBI\u2014 lleg\u00f3 al barrio de Jasmine, todo cambi\u00f3. DREAM no solo transform\u00f3 el solar vac\u00edo de su manzana; transform\u00f3 a tres generaciones de su familia.<\/p>\n

Jasmine fue una de las primeras ni\u00f1as en jugar s\u00f3ftbol en lo que se convertir\u00eda en el Campo de los Sue\u00f1os. Diez a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, su hermana menor tambi\u00e9n se uni\u00f3 al programa. Y cuando la ciudad intent\u00f3 expropiar el campo en 1997, el abuelo de Jasmine fue uno de los l\u00edderes comunitarios que lucharon por conservarlo. Sab\u00eda lo importante que era para sus nietas y para todos los ni\u00f1os del barrio. No solo como un lugar para jugar b\u00e9isbol y s\u00f3ftbol, sino por todo lo que se hab\u00eda convertido: apoyo acad\u00e9mico y acceso a la universidad, un lugar donde hab\u00eda adultos que se preocupaban, la oportunidad de formar parte de un equipo.<\/p>\n

Hoy en d\u00eda, DREAM se ha convertido en una red de escuelas ch\u00e1rter en East Harlem y el Bronx. DREAM puede brindar servicios a los ni\u00f1os de maneras que Jasmine solo pod\u00eda imaginar en aquel entonces, incluyendo a su propio hijo, Syncere, quien ahora asiste a la escuela ch\u00e1rter DREAM.<\/p>\n

Cuando Syncere era peque\u00f1o, Jasmine dedicaba horas cada semana a llevarlo a diferentes citas: logopedas, terapeutas ocupacionales y m\u00e1s. Syncere tiene diversas necesidades de aprendizaje, lo que significa que requiere distintos tipos de apoyo. La escuela DREAM Charter School lo cambi\u00f3 todo para Jasmine y Syncere, porque all\u00ed pod\u00edan obtener todos los servicios que necesitaban: profesores, auxiliares docentes, directores y orientadores.<\/p>\n

Hace cinco a\u00f1os, Jasmine pronunci\u00f3 un discurso en el que detall\u00f3 sus sue\u00f1os para Syncere: \u201cMi hijo har\u00e1 pr\u00e1cticas profesionales y asistir\u00e1 a clases de preparaci\u00f3n para el SAT. Visitar\u00e1 campus universitarios por todo el pa\u00eds. Sabr\u00e1 gestionar la ayuda financiera y no se desanimar\u00e1 cuando el proceso de solicitud sea abrumador, como me pas\u00f3 a m\u00ed. Mi hijo ir\u00e1 a la universidad. E ir\u00e1 a la universidad ADECUADA para \u00e9l. Y mi hijo Syncere se GRADUAR\u00c1. No habr\u00e1 ning\u00fan obst\u00e1culo para su \u00e9xito. Tendr\u00e1 acceso a todas las oportunidades. El mundo estar\u00e1 a sus pies y su vida ser\u00e1 extraordinaria\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n

Como madre de un alumno de la escuela DREAM Charter School, Jasmine descubri\u00f3 que DREAM segu\u00eda siendo una escuela para todos los ni\u00f1os, tal como lo era cuando ella era una ni\u00f1a que buscaba un espacio seguro para perseguir sus sue\u00f1os. Jasmine encontr\u00f3 un refugio seguro en el campo de b\u00e9isbol con su equipo, al igual que su propio hijo, una generaci\u00f3n despu\u00e9s, encontr\u00f3 no solo una escuela, sino un hogar.<\/p>\n
